Day 12 – The Salt Flats

Being that we were unable to have our trip go as planned we have changed it so that we plan to hit the salt flats before sunset and stay ’til it gets dark. We knew we would be facing some rain up until 4pm today in Salt Lake City based on what the weather apps were telling us. The plan was to wait for Marco’s Ignition System, install it, take a trip to Bavarian Motors for an oil change and head to the post office. That would keep us busy until the rain clouds flew by.

With the Ignition System installed we head over to Bavarian Motors and they give us the unfortunate news that they only touch BMWs so the Hondas are a no go. They were nice enough to give is some pointers though and let us know that O’Reilly’s Auto Parts recycles used oil for free. We make our run to the post office and then have lunch at Taco Time. After lunch we go to O’Reillys and change our oil. During this whole time it never rained more than a few drops. We thank the skies and head out for Wendover so we can drop our belongings and go to the Boneville Salt Flats.

We’re about 70 miles out when we start seeing the salt flats and the excitement is hard to contain. We begin fist pumping and air punching as we ride through. It was short lived as Marco’s bike breaks down once again. It won’t turn over, there’s no power. We hang out and take some pictures in this area of the Salt Flats and enjoy the little bit that we could.

A gentleman pulls over to see if we need help and if he can assist in anyway. His name is Sean, he tells us after some conversation and figuring out that there wasn’t much he could do. He informs us we aren’t far from town and after hanging out for a bit heads back on the road with his children who had been keeping entertained on the salt flats.

We ride into town to call it a night but first we head over to a casino in West Wendover to have dinner before heading back to get some rest. Tomorrow morning there will be much to do.
