Day 4 – We make a break for it.

We woke up today to some not so good weather reports. Even though it won’t rain in Kingdom City until 2pm, Kansas City is already experiencing rain and the clouds are moving towards us. We take a quick trip to the local Walmart to make some purchases we needed and then come back and try to decide on whether to make a break for it or stay in and get some work done, at which point we would be behind schedule. It’s about 10:30am, half hour before check out time when we decide we will take the risk and make a break for it. We had been monitoring the weather all morning and the risk seemed like the best option. We pack and suit up for rain as quickly as possible and head out on the highway.

Traveling down I70 the clouds ahead don’t look promising so we pull into a gas station about 30 minutes into the ride to check the weather channel app. It looks like we will be riding in between the two clouds and just miss the rain so we power through. About another 30 minutes into the ride we run into rain and take the next exit to take shelter under a gas station. We look at the weather app and the best thing to do is wait it out at this point since the rain will just roll through for the next hour and then stop. It was about 1:15pm so we decide that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get food while we wait. We cover our bikes and walk into the sub shop to eat. The rain stops and we set back out on the road. Today hasn’t been going so well. We started late, the weather is not cooperating, and it looks like we are going to go from being ahead of schedule to being behind schedule.

Further down the highway, about another 30 minutes of riding, we run into a little bit more rain and again stop at the next gas station. It seems like today we are just hopping from one gas station to another. We check the weather once more and wait for a few minutes to let this cloud roll by. We also decide that we will ride to Lawrence, Kansas which would put us exactly on schedule. Marco books us an airbnb in Lawrence and confirms the booking at this stop. Back on the road we drive around Kansas City circling it from the south and finally into Lawrence, our final destination for the day.

day4-2

We could’ve kept going but we figure we should call it an early day today so get some rest and get caught up on our social media and blogging.

day4-3

Checking the weather app all looks golden tomorrow. We’ll have a cloudy and fresh morning that will lead into a sunny and hot afternoon. The plan tomorrow is to get as far into Colorado as we can, although ending the day in Goodland, Kansas will still have us on schedule.
